Georgia might be the most music-dense state in the South: Macon raised Little Richard, James Brown grew up in Augusta, the Allman Brothers built Capricorn Records out of Macon in the early 1970s, Athens kicked off the American indie revolution through R.E.M. and the B-52's, and Atlanta turned OutKast and the Dungeon Family into a trap dynasty that still runs hip-hop in the 2020s. Wuxtry Records hits 50 years in 2026 with its Athens and Decatur locations, the original Athens shop being where Peter Buck met Michael Stipe in 1980. Atlanta's Criminal Records co-founded Record Store Day, Wax 'N' Facts and Fantasyland anchor Little Five Points, and Macon's Habersham CD's has been running since 1971. BEYOND GEORGIA: VINYL JOURNEYS FROM THE PEACH STATE
As the last track spins in the Peach State, every shop you flipped through today is just one verse in a much bigger Southern catalog. South Carolina Record Stores: Travel east to South Carolina, where Charleston's downtown shops carry beach music and lowcountry soul, Columbia's college crates hide punk and indie pressings on the cheap, and Myrtle Beach's boardwalk stores keep the family-vacation weeks stocked with one more crate to flip.
Florida Record Stores: Drop south into Florida, where Miami's Sweat Records carries the city's Latin and bass lineage, Tampa Bay's Bananas Records and Sound Exchange hold the deepest dig in the Southeast, and Orlando's Park Ave CDs has anchored the city for forty years.
Alabama Record Stores: Roll west into Alabama, where Muscle Shoals shops keep the FAME and Swampers lineage stocked, Birmingham's Seasick Records and Renaissance anchor the city's punk and soul circuit, and the Mobile Gulf Coast picks up where the Florida Panhandle leaves off.
California Record Stores: Fly west to California, where LA's Amoeba Hollywood is one of the world's most celebrated record stores, the Bay Area's Rasputin and Amoeba Berkeley run a parallel dig, and the LA-Atlanta hip-hop industry axis keeps Georgia producers making regular California pilgrimages.
