Kentucky gave bluegrass its name through Bill Monroe of Rosine, raised Loretta Lynn in a Butcher Hollow coal camp, and sent Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers out of the eastern hollers to redraw modern country. Louisville added Slint, My Morning Jacket, and the Bonnie 'Prince' Billy catalog to the lineage. Guestroom Records runs two Louisville shops after the renovated-firehouse Highlands location opened in November 2025, the Great Escape's Bardstown Road flagship anchors the long-form dig, and Better Days Records East holds down Barret Avenue as one of the oldest Black-owned record stores in the country. Cut Corner Records reopened in 2025 to take the Lexington space CD Central left behind, while Bowling Green, Owensboro, Paducah, and Eastern Kentucky towns from Ashland to Whitesburg fill in the river country and coalfield hollows. Tennessee Record Stores: Drop south into Tennessee, where Memphis still spins Sun, Stax, and Three 6 Mafia in roughly equal measure, Nashville's East Side stocks outlaw country alongside Third Man pressings, and Knoxville keeps the Appalachian thread alive on the college-town shelves.
Missouri Record Stores: Hop west to Missouri, where St. Louis's Vintage Vinyl in the Loop carries deep soul and indie, Kansas City's Mills Record Company and Vinyl Renaissance run the Midtown circuit, and the Ozark towns hide bluegrass and rockabilly pressings.
