Bozeman's Cactus Records has been Montana's oldest record store since 1985, holding the line from the original downtown corner before relocating to West Main in 2022 after the real-estate market priced it out. Missoula's Rockin Rudy's runs 25,000 square feet of records and Montana-made goods on Blaine Street since 1982 with a second vinyl-focused location at Record Heaven on Ronan. Ear Candy on Higgins Avenue has been the Missoula hip-hop and electronic anchor since 1997. The Treasure State's music identity runs through Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, who was born in Helena and started his first band Tarkio at the University of Montana in Missoula in 1996 before heading west to form the Decemberists in Portland.
