Oregon built its musical identity in Portland: the Decemberists formed there in 2000, the Dandy Warhols in 1994, Elliott Smith spent his most productive years there before LA, and Modest Mouse and the Shins both wound up Portland-based after relocating from elsewhere. Esperanza Spalding was born in Portland in 1984 before winning five Grammys, Pink Martini has run their orchestral-pop empire since 1994, and Mississippi Records' 230-plus reissue releases have made the North Albina label globally respected. Music Millennium has been the Pacific Northwest's oldest existing record store since 1969 on East Burnside, with owner Terry Currier seeking a successor to preserve the music legacy. Mississippi Records pairs the label with vintage audio gear at Mississippi Home Stereo, Jackpot Records has run its own indie label since 2004, and Exiled Records relocated as Exiled West to Canyon Road in 2022.
